Discover Kayak offers classes for the absolute beginner to expert ocean paddlers with ACA certified instructors in DFW and across Texas. Teaching with the best equipment, we have the right boat, paddle and lifejacket for you to maximize the fun and safety in your experience.  Our exclusive line up of classes can take your skills as far as you want to go!

After taking a class you'll have the knowledge to select the right gear the first time, saving you much more then the price of the class. 

Kayak Basics

No experience necessary!

This three hour class covers 6 basic strokes, safety, how to get back in your kayak with a partners help if you fall out and general kayaking knowledge. You'll also see the difference between boats, paddles and how to transport and carry boats. In a couple of hours you'll have more confidence and skill then you imagined you would ever have in a kayak.

Intermediate Kayak

Now that you taken the basics class and had time to practice, you may want to refine your strokes and add to your skills. Intermediate Kayak will add maneuvering strokes ( bow rudder, stern rudder, sideslip, low brace turn etc..) that can turn and control your boat effortlessly. Support strokes or bracing, a skill to prevent capsizing, will also be added. Towing methods and group leadership will be introduced and what to carry in your boat on longer trips. We will take all these skills and learn to use them while in motion as we do in everyday paddling.

This is a seven hour class presented on 1st and 3rd Sundays, Location: Grapevine      9am-5pm Cost: $125

The Kayak Roll

The kayak roll is not a advanced skill, it is a skill that can be added at any stage in a paddler's progression of learning. With our three step process on the surface you will build the muscle memory necessary to roll before you try underwater, eliminating a lot of the dunking. With a roll, you will find you will advance you're skills quickly because you won't worry about capsizing, it's also a great way to cool down in Texas. Discover Kayak has a 85% success rate in the first two hour session, 100% in the follow-up when necessary. You may return for follow ups as much as needed, no extra charge.

What to bring: Water shoes, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, floaties attached to glasses and camera, snacks and a big hat. (not required, suggested) Expect to get wet.

 Wednesday Practice Sessions

Once you've taken a lesson with Discover Kayak how do you remember all that stuff! We want you to get the practice you need at a low cost.

Come out every Wednesday evening to Meadowmere Park, Lake Grapevine from 5-8pm to practice with a certified instructor. This has been a very popular program with 10-15 paddlers a week. Past students of Discover Kayak can rent a boat for $20 for the evening, if you have you're own boat it's free! Watch "Current Happenings" at the top of this page for weather cancellations.

 Beginner Kayak, Full Day

This seven hour class gives the students more time to practice and  try different boats.  In addition, you'll also learn how to get back in kayak without assistance if you capsize and along with a partner. This class can be taken as a first class or a follow up to the Kayak Basics class.

 Advanced Kayaking

In Advanced Kayak your flatwater skills will be complete. We'll add edging to all our strokes increasing their effectiveness.This is how a experienced kayakers control the boats direction, increasing the effectiveness of any stroke and the ability to take on rough water. Edging is the art in kayaking.

More rescue methods, chart reading, what to carry in a boat on longer trips and boat repair in the field will be added to your skills

Classes held at Lake Grapevine

This is a eight hour class taught on 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month on, 9am-5pm.

 Rough Water School

The only program of it's type in Texas, open water paddling to the extreme! Learn the skills locally then go to the coast!

Open Water Boot Camp, Galveston Texas   Are you ready to jump right into the deep in?

This 2 day class in Galveston will teach you open water survival in a kayak.Surf, currents, rescues, towing and navigation will be covered. You'll learn strokes and paddling skills for coastal conditions from Steve Walls, Texas only Level 4 Coastal Instructor

 Cost : $250

 Dates:        Mon-Tues, June 25-26

• Renters must read and sign a waiver
• Life Jackets must be worn at all times.
• Minors must be accompanied by an adult
• Not responsible for weather cancellations
• Renters will stay within boundrys set by Discover Kayak. Adults may file a paddle plan and leave area if they are familair with self rescues and approved by Discover Kayak (additional deposit required)
• Kayak may not be transported from the area
• Discover Kayak is not resposible for damage to personal items.
• One person only in single kayaks, no children or pet riders.
